A popular belief that many wax melt lovers have is that you can only use your wax melts in specific wax melt burners.
After doing some research, I’m pleased to report that some oil burners are suitable for use with wax melts. However, it is very important that you check the recommendations for individual burners before melting wax.
Not all oil burners are suitable for wax melts. When you purchase the oil burner, the packaging should specify whether it is suitable for oil and wax or only for oil. Wax heats at a higher temperature than oil, which could cause an incompatible oil burner to overheat. An overheated burner is a potential fire risk – something no one wants to risk in their home.
Some oil burners may not have been tested with wax by the manufacturer. This means they will not have passed the safety checks and been approved for wax use. Rather than taking unnecessary risks, check the recommendations of the oil burner or simply use a wax burner instead.
An oil burner typically uses a tealight to heat the oil. For wax melts to work, you need to heat them to a certain temperature so that they melt and release their fragrance. If your oil burner is safe to use with wax melts, all you need to do is place your wax melt into the top of the oil burner and light the candle below.
Once the burner heats up, which typically takes about 10 minutes, the wax will begin to melt and release its scent.
When you have finished with your wax melt, you clean it up in much the same way as you would if you were using oil. Blow out the candle and wait for the wax to cool, then scoop out the wax before it hardens.
An important factor to consider when using an oil burner is the burn time of the candle compared to the burn time of the wax melt. Typically, a tealight burns for approximately four hours. Depending on the brand of your wax melt, they usually last between 8-12 hours.
This means your wax melts can be used multiple times. Once your tealight has burned out, simply allow your wax melt to cool and become hard again. Next time you want to use your burner, you just need to light a new tealight. If you are unsure how long your wax melt should last, the general rule is to use it until the fragrance reduces or loses its scent completely.
Although so many of us love wax melts and the great fragrance they release, safety should always be our number one priority. Although wax melts can be used with oil burners, this is not always true. Ensuring you are burning your wax melt safely is very important.
If you know your wax melts are burning safely in your home, all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the beautiful fragrance.
